Concierge in Plaisance and Pernety, Paris 14th

Plaisance covers the western side of the 14th. It starts by the Gare Montparnasse tracks in the north, follows avenue du Maine and rue Daguerre to the east, then the line of the old Petite Ceinture railway, and runs down to boulevard Adolphe-Pinard in the south, with rue du Commandant-René-Mouchotte on its western edge. Rue d’Alésia cuts across it. Pernety is not an official quarter: it is a street and a metro station in the north of Plaisance, and the name locals use to place a flat.

Where the name comes from

Plaisance is older than the 19th-century housing plots. A 17th-century drawing already shows a farm called “Playsance”, near today’s rue du Château, and around the mid-1800s Alexandre Chauvelot used the name to sell his plots. Rue Pernety runs from 24 rue Didot to 71 rue Vercingétorix and honours General Joseph Marie de Pernety, who owned the land.

Local landmarks

  • Rue Raymond-Losserand, about 1,640 metres long, from avenue du Maine near Montparnasse cemetery to boulevard Brune by Porte de Vanves; it was called rue de Vanves until 1945
  • Pernety station (line 13), under rue Raymond-Losserand where it meets rue Pernety, between Gaîté and Plaisance stations
  • Notre-Dame-du-Travail, 59 rue Vercingétorix, built from 1897 to 1902 by Jules-Godefroy Astruc, with an exposed iron frame, listed as a historic monument in 2016
  • Hôpital Saint-Joseph, at nos. 163 to 193 rue Raymond-Losserand, a useful address for the guest’s welcome book
  • Place de Catalogne, plus rue Didot, rue des Thermopyles and rue du Château

Father Soulange-Bodin raised the money for a church serving local workers, the men who put up the great Paris exhibitions, and its frame reuses parts of the 1855 Palais de l’Industrie. Rue Pernety comes out on rue Vercingétorix at no. 71.

What we do for a home in Plaisance
